22012019: #MATALA – THE LAST HIPPIE VILLAGE

Kali spera! 🙂 Hope you’re all getting through winter well! I’m really freezing a lot these days (-5°C and no snow atm) and still can’t wait to travel to Finland in February after not being there for 8 years. However, this is going to be another sun-loaded post about Crete! I previously wrote about my time in Agios Nikolaos, so today I’ll give you some impressions about Matala, a small village in the South of the island.

Ich hoffe, ihr kommt alle gut durch den Winter! Ich bin wirklich am Frieren (aktuell hier -5°C, aber kein Schnee) und trotzdem freu ich mich riesig auf eine meiner nächsten anstehenden Reisen Ende Februar, welche nach Finnland geht (seit 8 Jahren endlich mal wieder). Heute gibt es allerdings erst mal wieder einen sonnengeladenen Post von Kreta. Letzte Woche habe ich ja über die Zeit in Agios Nikolaos geschrieben. Heute geht es (mal wieder) in den Süden der Insel, und ich möchte Euch gerne ein paar Eindrücke von Matala zeigen. 

Matala is a cute little town (quite touristy for its size) and a dead end, just 2 km Southern from my second home Pitsidia. It’s famous for its caves (often on postcards of Crete) and the Hippie Culture, which is still noticeable. Once a year (mostly in June) the so called Matala Beach Festival takes place. A must-do if you like Coachella vibes, but hate how it developed into an Outfit-Showing-Influencer-Event and prefer real Hippie vibes. 😉 Concerting the size of the event the Matala Beach Festival is of course not comparable to Coachella, what makes it even more attractive, I’d say.

Matala ist ein kleines niedliches Dorf (für seine Größe ziemlich touristisch) und eine Sackgasse, nur 2 km südlich von meiner zweiten Heimat Pitsidia. Matala ist berühmt für seine Höhlen (oft auf Postkarten zu sehen) und die immer noch spürbare Hippie-Kultur, die versucht wird seit den 60ern dort aufrecht zu erhalten. Einmal im Jahr (meistens im Juni) findet dort das Matala Beach Festival statt. Ein Must-Do, wenn ihr Coachella Vibes liebt, aber hasst dass es zu einem Influencer-Outfit-Event wurde und echte Hippie-Vibes bevorzugt. 😉 Natürlich ist es größen-technisch nicht ansatzweise mit Coachella zu vergleichen, was es noch sympathischer macht.

We usually drive to Matala to have some (sunset-)drinks in one of the chilled bars and cafés there, or to climb the Red Beach. Matala itself has only a quite small beach, which is -no doubts- really beautiful, but mostly stuffed with people. 

Meistens fahren wir nach Matala um dort einen Sunset-Drink oder einen Kaffee in einer der chilligen Bars zu trinken, oder um zum Red Beach zu wandern. Matala selbst hat nur einen ziemlich kleinen – dennoch sehr hübschen – Strand, der aber meistens ziemlich voll ist.

The Red Beach though is just a 30 min hike over a hill from Matala and absolutely worth to see. Little advice: Wear sturdy shoes! 😀 When my mum went there with me for the first time (I was still a little kid) she wore flip-flops, had to carry me because I didn’t want to walk and also carried an air mattress in her other hand. Still no idea how she made it there. <3 Today we know better how to professionally hike, haha. 😀 Anyway, just the view you have, when you made it half way, is worth it to climb.

Der Red Beach hingegen ist nur durch eine 30-minütige Wanderung über einen kleinen Berg von Matala aus zu erreichen und absolut sehenswert! Kleiner Tipp: Festes Schuhwerk! 😀 Als meine Mum mit mir dort zum ersten Mal hingewandert ist (ich war ca. 3 oder 4 Jahre), hatte sie Flip-Flops an. Außerdem musste sie mich zwischenzeitlich tragen, weil ich damals keine Lust hatte, die ganze Zeit zu laufen. 😀 In der anderen Hand hatte sie eine bereits aufgepumpte Luftmatratze. Ich weiß immer noch nicht, wie sie das damals gemacht hat. <3  Heute wissen wir es besser, wie wir am besten zum Red Beach kommen. 😀 Jedenfalls lohnt sich die Wanderung allein für den Ausblick, den man nach der Hälfte der Wanderung vom Berg aus hat.
