14012019: #AGIOS NIKOLAOS & KRITSA

Hope you all had a great New Year’s Eve! I celebrated with some friends near by my hometown and then the year started with *surprisingly* uni staff, can’t wait to finish the Bachelor’s Degree in June and be a free human haha. 

Ich hoffe, ihr hattet alle einen guten Start in das neue Jahr. Ich habe mit ein paar Freunden im Nachbardorf gefeiert. Das Jahr an sich hat dann natürlich mal wieder mit *Überraschung* Uni-Sachen angefangen. Ich freue mich dermaßen auf Juni, wenn ich den Bachelor (hoffentlich) endlich in der Tasche habe. 😀

Again two months passed by and now I finally found the time to write about my Crete-Trip from last September. I know I’m continuing to use university as an excuse for not having time (but it is really the truth). Important advice: Just never go to a private uni in Germany, you will regret it ANY WAY!!

Schon wieder zwei Monate um und hier ist nichts passiert, aber jetzt habe ich endlich die Zeit gefunden, mal über meine Kreta-Reise letzten September zu schreiben. Ich nehme die Uni einfach immer wieder als Ausrede dafür, dass ich keine Zeit habe, aber es ist einfach wahr. Wichtiger Tipp an dieser Stelle: Niemals auf eine Privatuni in Deutschland gehen!! Bereuen inklusive!!

Back to Crete: I guess everybody knows that I feel home every time I visit the Greek Island because I used to be there twice a year as a child and spend a lot of summers there. Apart from visiting “home” we decided to always add some stops on the island that we haven’t seen yet and that starts to be difficult haha. So this time we started in the South, what I call home, then went a few days to Panormos (near by Rethymno) and ended the trip in Kritsa (near by Agios Nikolaos), where I haven’t been before.

Zurück zum Thema Kreta: Ich glaub, die meisten wissen, dass wenn ich von Kreta spreche, gerne mal das Wort “Zu Hause” eingebunden wird. Das liegt daran, dass ich als Kind fast jedes Jahr zwei Mal dort war und oft den ganzen Sommer dort verbracht habe. Abgesehen von dem Heimatbesuch wollten wir auch noch etwas neues von Kreta sehen (das wird jedes Jahr etwas schwieriger :D) Dieses Mal sind wir im Süden der Insel gestartet (also in der “Heimat”), sind dann für ein paar Tage nach Panormos gefahren (in der Nähe von Rethymnon) und haben unseren Trip in Kritsa (in der Nähe von Agios Nikolaos) beendet, wo ich vorher noch nicht war.

I split up the posts into the different areas and today I want to share my Agios Nikolas impressions with you. We decided to not sleep directly in the city, but in the small town Kritsa, which is around 10km away. In general I would always recommend to rent a car in Crete, it pays off so much!! 🙂

Zum Süden und zu Panormos werdet ihr hier in den nächsten Wochen was lesen können. Heute geht es erstmal um die Zeit in Agios Nikolaos. Wir haben uns dazu entscheiden, nicht direkt in der Stadt zu übernachten und ein schönes Air B’n’B im Nachbarort Kritsa (ca. 10km von Agios Nikolaos) gebucht. Auf Kreta würde ich übrigens generell jedem empfehlen, ein Auto zu mieten, es lohnt sich!! 🙂

KRITSA

Krista is a very cute town built on a hill and famous for its embroidered table skirts, which are sold there everywhere. The town is quite cultivated, and the little streets (which you can find in almost every greek village) are just too beautiful to be true. We booked an Air B’n’B and were more than happy with our catch! I dare to say that this was the most beautiful Air B’n’B I’ve ever been to. The charming little house is located directly next to a church and provides a beautiful view over the valley before Kritsa. It consists of three apartments. Our hosts were super friendly and they have two cute dogs. Absolutely coming back there! 🙂

Kritsa ist ein sehr niedliches Dorf im Norden Kretas, das in einen Hang gebaut wurde. Berühmt ist Kritsa vor allem für die bestickten Tischdecken, die dort überall verkauft werden. Das Dorf ist sehr gepflegt und die kleine Gassen, wie sie in fast jedem griechischen Dorf zu finden sind, sind zu schön um wahr zu sein. Mit unserem Air B’n’B sind wir mehr als happy gewesen. Ich würde sogar sagen, dass es das schönste Air B’n’B war, in dem ich bisher gewesen bin. Das kleine hübsche Natursteinhaus ist direkt neben der Dorfkirche und man hat einen tollen Ausblick auf das Tal vor Kritsa. Es besteht aus drei Wohneinheiten, die vermietet werden und dem Apartment der Vermieter selbst. Unsere Gastgeber waren superfreundlich und haben zwei süße Hunde. Absolut wiederholungsbedürftig! 🙂

AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Agios Nikolaos itself is super beautiful as well but quite touristy and stuffed. It’s a place you have to visit once, and then you’re happy again to leave the hustle and bustle behind you. By the way it’s worth it to walk up the little hill because you will have a beautiful view on the city. 😉

Agios Nikolaos selbst ist wirklich sehr schön, aber auch ziemlich voll von Touristen. Das ist einer der Orte, “die man schon mal gesehen haben sollte”, aber man auch irgendwie happy ist, wieder aus dem Trubel herauszukommen. Es lohnt sich übrigens die vielen Treppenstufen hochzusteigen, die Aussicht ist echt der Hammer. 😉

This view is worth it to hike some stairs, isn’t it? 🙂

SPINALONGA 

Then we got the recommendation to make a daytrip to Spinalonga, an island located near by Elounda. The island is famous for its history being a Leber colony in the 20th century. Today its a popular historic sightseeing point. From Spinalonga you will have an amazing view on the sea and learn a lot of historic facts. When we’ve been there it was quite full of people, but still I’d recommend to do the excursion!

Dann haben wir noch die Empfehlung bekommen, einen Tagesausflug auf die Insel Spinalonga zu machen, welche in der Nähe von Elounda liegt. Die Insel ist bekannt als frühere Lepra-Insel und wurde heute zu einer historischen Sehenswürdigkeit. Von Spinalonga aus hat man eine wunderschöne Sicht auf das Meer und erfährt einige historische Fakten. Als wir dort waren, war es sehr voll, aber dennoch ein empfehlenswerter Ausflug!

BTW: This was a tiny beach near by Agios Nikolaos, which was super filled, what you can’t see on this picture 😀 I’d recommend to go early in the morning and not in the afternoon 🙂
