29042018: #FUERTEVENTURA – EL COTILLO

Time for some Spain vibes on a cloudy Sunday afternoon!

Zeit für ein bisschen Spanien-Stimmung an einem Sonntag Nachmittag!

As we made it to our “tradition” do go on a last-minute trip to wherever over Easter, we mostly end up in Spain during this time of the year. This year it was Fuerteventura (just like last year :D). It was my third time on Fuerte and I have to say that it was my favorite trip there. The first time (I think 2010 or 2011) we’ve been to Costa Calma, a very tourisic center. It was a nice holiday in a great hotel but I prefer to be in a less “touri-place”. The second trip last year went to Jandia, in the very South of the Island. Beautiful Beaches around, a lot of cliffs and in the middle of nowhere – also nice, but not that amazing if you don’t have a car. This year we’ve been to El Cotillo, a very cute little village in the North-west of Fuerteventura. And by saying village I mean a real village that doesn’t only consist of hotels and touristic souvenir shops.

Wir haben uns es quasi zur “Tradition” gemacht, über Ostern einen Last-Minute-Wohin-auch-immer-Trip zu machen. Der endet zu dieser Jahreszeit meistens in Spanien, auf den Kanaren. Dieses Jahr ging es, wie auch schon letztes Jahr nach Fuerteventura. Für mich war es die dritte Reise nach Fuerte und auch meine Lieblingslocation. Das erste Mal Fuerteventura (2010 oder 2011 glaube ich) waren wir an der Costa Calma, einem eher touristischen Ort an der Westküste. Es war zwar ein toller Urlaub in einem echt schönen Hotel, aber am liebsten bin ich in einem richtigen Ort und nicht im Touri-Zentrum. Der zweite Aufenthalt auf Fuerte ging nach Jandia, die Südspitze der Insel, Dort gibt es einige wunderschöne weiße Sandstrände, viele Klippen und sonst aber nichts. Ohne ein Auto ist man also ein wenig aufgeschmissen, es sei denn es geht ausschließlich um Strand-Entspannungsurlaub. Dieses Jahr stand El Cotillo auf dem Plan, ein sehr süßes Dorf an der Nord-West Küste. Und mit Dorf ist hier ein echtes Dorf gemeint, das nicht ausschließlich aus Hotels, Souvenir-Shops und einer Strandpromenade besteht.

We booked a last-minute all inclusive offer, so  we didn’t have to organize anything on our own since it was only a short-trip with focus BEACH. As the name already reveals, Fuerteventura is always windy and in April the wind can be really cold. We were lucky with the weather, it was sunny almost every day and if you find a place in the wind shadow, you can sunbath in 30°C and even enter the cold Atlantic ocean.

Das Angebot war ein Last-Minute All-inclusive Schnapper, das heißt vor Ort mussten wir uns um rein gar nichts mehr kümmern, was bei einem so kurzen Urlaub gut ist. Der Fokus lag eindeutig auf dem Wort STRAND. Wie schon der Name verrät, ist es auf Fuerteventura IMMER windig und der Wind kann im April doch noch ziemlich fresh sein. Wir hatten Glück mit dem Wetter, es war echt sonnig und wenn man einen windgeschützten Platz hat, kann es schon bis zu 30/ 35°C in der Sonne sein, sodass man sogar in den 17°C kalten Atlantik springen kann.

So focus BEACH: One thing that my mum and me just can’t do: laying around for more than an hour without doing anything, hahah. So we had a lot of walks and discovered the area including the cute little village El Cotillo by feet.

Also Fokus STRAND: Es gibt eine Sache, die Mama und ich einfach nicht können. Rumliegen für mehr als eine Stunde, ohne irgendwas zu machen, geht einfach nicht, hahah. Wir sind ziemlich viel Spazieren gewesen und haben die Gegend inklusive des kleinen Dorfs zu Fuß erkundet.

This specific beach really looked like the Caribbean Sea to me (even if I haven’T been there yet, but in my imagination it looks like this) 😀

Fuerteventura – Surfer’s paradise. They say, if you can surf in the Atlantic Ocean, you can surf everywhere.

Fuerteventura – Das Paradies für Surfer. Man sagt dort, wer hier im Atlantik surfen lernt, kann überall surfen.

Right in time I got sick one day before departure so I was with a flu during the first half of the trip. Since the sun is the best medicine anyway, I quickly recovered and took some surf lessons, yaaayy! As waves are also related to the moon and it was full moon period the days before I really got a bit anxious. In front of our hotel were a lot of cliffs and stones where 4 or 5 m waves broke. For my reassurance we didn’t go surfing at this shore (surprise, surprise that beginners won’t surf a 4 m wave) :D. It was so much fun that I went a second time on the day we left (a bit stressful with packing but so I am – outbid every second of the holiday).

Perfekt getimed hat mich einen Tag vor Abflug eine schöne Erkältung ereilt und ich war die erste Hälfte des Urlaubs krank. Herzlichen Glückwunsch 😀 Aber da Sonne ja ein Heilmittel für alles ist, ging es schnell bergauf und meine Surfpläne mussten nicht ins Wasser fallen ! Am vorletzten Tag ging’s dann endlich in den Neoprenanzug und aufs Surfbrett ! Da Wellen unter anderem in Bezug zum Mond höher und flacher sind und es gerade den Tag vorher Vollmond war, wurde ich natürlich schon nervös. Direkt vor unserem Hotel konnte ich die schönen 4-5 m hohen Wellen beobachten und perfekt sehen wie sie an der felsigen Küste brechen. Perfekte Vorraussetzungen für einen Surfanfänger 😀 Zu meiner Beruhigung sind wir nicht an diesem Strand gesurft (Überraschung, hahah), sondern ein wenig weiter gen Süden gefahren. Es hat einfach so viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich ges nicht lassen konnte, den nächsten Tag, (eigentlich Abreisetag) nochmal in die Fluten zu springen. Minimale Stresssituation entstanden beim zu späten Verlassen des Hotelzimmers, weil eine Person den Urlaub wieder bis zur letzten Sekunde ausreizen musste, hey it’s me! 😀

For me surfing is just one of the most fascinating and amazing kinds of sport. I always admired surfing and wanted to learn it as well, but also always was afraid of the power those big waves can have (and still am). I had some bad experience with current once, so I tend to be super careful especially with current as it’s something you can’t see from the outside. So conflict inside of me: There is no better moment to surf through a wave and see the whole beach from the water (succeeded in that ONCE in Bali, seriously best feeling ever) vs. wipe out 1 million times and hurt yourself. First argument predominated.

Für mich ist Surfen eine der faszinieretsten Sportarten, die es gibt. Seit ich klein bin bewundere ich das Surfen und wollte es schon immer auch probieren. Gleichzeitig hatte ich auch schon immer Schiss vor der Kraft von hohen Wellen, gute Kombi! 😀 Außerdem hatte ich schon einmal in meinem Leben schlechte Erfahrung mit Unterströmung, seit dem bin ich diesbezüglich übervorsichtig, gerade weil Strömung etwas ist, was man von außen nicht sehen kann. Innerer Konflikt: Es gibt keinen schöneren Moment als den, in dem man durch eine Welle surft und auf den Strand schaut (bislang genau einmal auf Bali geschafft, bestes Feeling ever) VS. 1 Millionen Mal vom Board fallen, von Wellen untergespült werden und vom Board mitgerissen zu werden, bis man orientierungslos versucht, vor der nächsten Welle weggepaddelt zu sein :D. Ratet welches Argument gesiegt hat…

And then suddenly it was already time to say good bye. 4 days passed by like a flip. By the way I was having the muscle soreness of my life! Couldn’t lift my arms for 2 days, but I already knew that feeling from surfing in Bali, worth the pain.

Und ganz plötzlich sind 4 Tage schon vorbei, die Heimreise steht an. Mit dem Muskelkater meines Lebens ging es zurück in die Uni. Ich konnte meine Arme für 2 Tage nicht heben, aber das kannte ich schon aus Bali, der Schmerz ist es dennoch wert! 🙂
